Government
Tonganoxie is a city of the third class. This classification
is based on population. The form of government is mayor-council.
The mayor and five council members are elected at-large and
serve four-year terms. The mayor recommends and the city council
confirms the annual appointments of the city |

clerk, police chief, fire chief, city attorney and city engineer.
The city administrator position is created by ordinance under
the city's home-rule powers – and generally serves pursuant
to a three-year employment agreement. |

City Council: The Tonganoxie City Council is composed
of five elected officials. City Council members are elected
every two years and their terms run for four years each. No
more than three City Council seats are filled each election
year. The City Council usually meets every second and fourth
Monday night of the month. more

Planning Commission: The Tonganoxie Planning Commission
consists of seven hard-working volunteers. They study building
plans and proposals and make recommendations to the City Council.
The Planning Commission meets every first Wednesday of the
month at 7 p.m.
