The thought of Tonganoxie transportation brings one word to mind – “proximity”. The community enjoys great proximity to high-quality local and regional highways, airports and railroads. Located in southern Leavenworth County and along the northwestern border of the Kansas City metropolitan area, Tonganoxie residents enjoy the lifestyle amenities of a small community and the conveniences of a metropolitan area.

Local Highways. Locally, U.S. 24-40 Highway serves Tonganoxie. The highway provides an eastern link to the Kansas Speedway and Kansas City, Kansas. The western route of the highway serves Lawrence and Topeka, offering proximity to the University of Kansas and the state capital. Kansas Highway 16 provides a northwestern outlet to allow travel to McLouth and Lake Perry. All of the described locations are within 10 to 40 minutes from Tonganoxie.

Regional Highways. The theme of proximity continues with convenient access to regional highways. Interstate 70 is only 10 minutes from Tonganoxie. Interstate 70 is a major east-west corridor across the country and allows local residents easy access to Denver and St. Louis or further. Interstate 435 is also only 10 minutes away and it provides access to all of the Kansas City metropolitan area due to its circular layout, which is convenient for commuters to Johnson County or the “northland.” Along Interstate 435 are connections with Interstate Highways 29 and 35. Interstate 29 is a direct route to Omaha, Nebraska, and Interstate 35 provides linkages to Des Moines, Iowa, and Wichita, Kansas.

Airports. Not interested in driving to your destination or perhaps business plans require a trip to a foreign country? Tonganoxie’s proximity to Kansas City International (KCI) Airport is only 30 minutes away. KCI is frequently cited as one of the most passenger-friendly airports in the country. Convenient parking and representation by all of the major airlines makes your next trip just a little less hectic. Tonganoxie is only minutes away from Kansas City’s Downtown Airport, which provides excellent charter service and corporate flights. Private pilots will appreciate being 15 minutes away from the Lawrence/Douglas County Airport located along U.S. 24-40 Highway.

Railroads. Looking to travel along a scenic corridor and reminisce of a past era? Rail travel via Amtrak is an attractive alternative. Tonganoxie residents can choose from either Lawrence or Kansas City Amtrak locations to board a passenger train. Kansas City’s rail terminal is the second-busiest freight rail terminal in the country. Union Pacific, Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Kansas City Southern are the largest rail carriers servicing this region.

Conclusion. Proximity is a strong asset for Tonganoxie and the travel alternatives available to choose from. NASCAR racing is practically in our backyard courtesy of the Kansas Speedway and professional baseball and football are within 30 minutes. World-class shopping and dining at Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza are easily accessible. Major employers such as Sprint; Hallmark Cards; federal, state, and local governments are conveniently located for residents that commute. Once in Tonganoxie, you may choose not to leave due to the availability of high-quality restaurants and shopping locally.
